Benefits of Chiropractic Care During Pregnancy

Pregnancy and birth are two of the most amazing and strenuous experiences a woman’s body can go through. Through hormonal changes, pelvic shifts, weight gain, nausea, and many other symptoms, a woman’s body is truly put through the ringer while bringing a beautiful bundle of joy into the world. Chiropractic care throughout pregnancy and during postpartum recovery can help a woman’s body handle all of these changes in stride, and has amazing benefits for both mom and baby.

Maintain a Healthier Pregnancy

Misalignments in the spine (subluxations) can irritate the nerves in the body, causing interference. This interference disrupts communication between the brain and  body through the nervous system, and creates a less than ideal environment. When the spine is in proper alignment, the body works more effectively to provide greater health for mom and baby.

Control Nausea, Acid Reflux, Etc.

The nervous system controls every aspect of the body- every cell, organ, tissue, you name it. The brain sends messages through the nerves in the spine to tell the body how to function. If those messages get scattered due to nerve interference caused by subluxations, dysfunction occurs, leading to headaches, nausea, reflux, and pain. Correcting these subluxations often leads to reducing or eliminating those unpleasant side effects of pregnancy.

Reduce Labor and Delivery Time

Studies show that first time moms who received regular chiropractic care during pregnancy experienced labor times 25% shorter than those who did not receive chiropractic care during pregnancy. For second time (or more) moms, this average increases to 31% shorter labor times. How? Chiropractic helps maintain and correct the alignment and function of the spine and pelvis, both of which are incredibly important during labor and delivery.

Prevent Potential Cesarean Delivery and Increases Chance of Natural Delivery

A misaligned pelvis may make it difficult for baby to get into the proper position for delivery, increasing the chances of a cesarean delivery. The Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics published a study showing that chiropractic was shown to have an 82% success rate of babies turning vertex. Techniques are used to help correct pelvis dysfunction, eliminating muscle and ligament tension in order to improve fetal positioning and improve mom’s ability to have a safer and easier birth.

Relieve Back, Neck, and Joint Pain

Statistics say that 50-70% of women experience back pain during pregnancy. Unfortunately, many have accepted back pain as part of pregnancy, but this doesn’t have to be the case! Chiropractic helps ease back, neck, and join pain. A study published by the American Medical Association showed that chiropractic allowed women to carry and deliver their babies with significantly more comfort. Another study showed a 50% decrease in the need for painkillers during delivery for those who received regular chiropractic adjustments during pregnancy.
