5 Reasons Why Chiropractic Care is Cost Effective

Chiropractic care as a science of treatment is getting so much attention recently. The reasons for this are many but most importantly, it is due to its cost effectiveness. Many studies provide real and accurate statistical data on this subject. Majority of these studies prove that chiropractic treatment is more cost effective than conventional treatment options. As we aim to compare the cost effectiveness of chiropractic, there are other factors that we need to consider. Such factors include after treatment care as well as the effectiveness of the treatment itself.

In our article, we shall be looking at five reasons why chiropractic care is famous for its cost effectiveness. In light of this, we shall have to quote several studies to support our claim. We hope to keep you well and truly informed. Information is power and with that power, you can change and improve your health for the better.

  1. Treatment of neuromusculoskeletal disorders

Many patients who suffer from neuromusculoskeletal disorders usually seek conventional treatment. Osteopathic and medical physicians are common in treating this condition. however, they  involve other third parties in the proceedings. Doctors of chiropractic who treat neuromusculoskeletal disorders work alone to remedy the condition.

In a study: J Manipulative Physiologic Therapy 1993 (Jun); 16 (5): 291–299, the researchers look to compare the cost effectiveness of chiropractic care compared to other treatment options for neuromusculoskeletal disorders. The basis of this research is simple, compare the treatment care as well as the insurance against the relative components. This 2-year research gives some revealing insights.

We can make comparisons as before. We can consider the 10 insurance categories and the admission rates for the hospitals. From the results, we learn that nearly ¼ of those patients who get chiropractic treatment experience a significant saving on the costs of treatment. The difference in costs of treating neuromusculoskeletal disorders is in the range of $ 1000.00.

  1. Chiropractic Care is cost effective in the treatment of common neck pains

Neck pain receives the credentials of a chronic illness. It is a constant occurrence we seem not able to shrug off. You come back from work and you have a very painful neck pain. You sleep in a certain position and you wake up with a stinging neck pain. In all these instances, we always seek painkillers to help relieve the pain. We end up using so much money on this painkillers that we forget to keep a record of it.

What if I told you, that there is an effective option both in treatment and in costs? There is really no debate about the effectiveness of chiropractic care in treating neck pains. What we need to prove is how cost effective chiropractic is in treating chronic neck pain. As a matter of fact, we only need to point you in the right direction since, studies exists that prove the cost effectiveness of chiropractic care in relation to the subject. consider the study below;

Background of the study: Neck pain is a disturbing and prevalent condition especially among older folks. However, although neck pain is a heavy burden, we know little with regards to the cost-effectiveness of the common treatments used.
Purpose of the study: An estimate of the costs of spinal manipulative therapy, home and exercise and supervised rehabilitative care in addition to SMT and HEA combined.

Study setting: The cost-effectiveness of the chiropractic was conducted basing on a clinical trial which is random.

Sample: 241 older adults, suffering from a chronic mechanical neck pain of ages over 65 years.
Measures for the outcome: consider indirect as well as direct costs over a 1 year period.

Methods: National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (#F32AT007507) as well as the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal together with the Skin Diseases (#P60AR062799), and Health Resources and Services Administration (#R18HP01425) all contributed to the financing of this study.
For the primary analysis of this study, we adopt a societal perspective. In the analysis phase, a healthcare perspective is preferable. The difference in cost as well as outcomes of the trial are estimates of a general equation of estimation.

The results of the study point out that the cumulative cost of SMT together with HEA is much lower at 5% in comparison to HEA alone. This cost is also 47% less than Supervised Rehabilitative Exercise together with HEA.

  1. Lower back pain treatment costs less in chiropractic

Another chronic pain that we can’t seem to eliminate entirely is the chronic back pain. Chronic back pain is similarly common in most folks. Poor sitting positions as well as strenuous exercises can result in lower back pains. At present there are many remedies for lower back pain. However the cost effectiveness of these options is not clear.

Relative studies which we can identify following systematic searches in databases such as CINAHL, Cochrane Library, EMBASE as well as MEDLINE strive to make clear the relevant cost effectiveness of the chiropractic treatments in comparison with other alternatives.

We can group these studies as; manual therapy, information and education, lone physical exercise therapy or a combination of both physiological as well as physical therapy. The data we collect from these studies shows that anything related to a combination of chiropractic treatment offers a better treatment alternative for lower back pain in terms of costs.

  1. International Health Conferences agree on the cost effectiveness of chiropractic care

On a yearly basis, the health sector always holds conference. These conferences intend to bring to light the developments we make in the health sector. These includes measures we take to ensure that humanity receives the best affordable treatment.

In majority of these conferences, chiropractic care has always received applauding. This is primarily for the way it has been able to cater for and provide low rate treatment. Here are some opinions from such conferences:

“Doctors of chiropractic are a vital part of our nation’s health care system. Your services have been proven both effective and cost-effective and every day you help countless Americans with a variety of health conditions.”

~ Kathleen Sebelius,
Secretary of Health and Human Services
2011 National Chiropractic Legislative Conference

“In the U.S., at least 200,000 microdiskectomies are performed annually at a direct cost of $5 billion, or $25,000 per procedure. Avoiding 60 percent of these surgeries [by sending the patients to chiropractors] would mean a reduction savings of $3 billion annually. In the Canadian study, patients receiving chiropractic care averaged 21 visits during their course of care. If a cost of $100 per patient visit is assumed for the care provided by the chiropractor, then the total cost per patient would be $2,100, yielding per patient savings of $22,900, or $2.75 billion dollars annually.”

Daniel Redwood, DC,

Professor at Cleveland Chiropractic College–Kansas City.

  1. Chiropractic has less and affordable insurance policies

A look at the insurance policies of both chiropractic as well as conventional medical treatment is overwhelming. In the normal hospitals you are to pay for medical insurance. This is directly cut from your salary. It doesn’t matter whether or not you will get sick.

Besides that, if you go to the hospital and request a surgical operation, there are more charges for you to pay. The accumulative insurance cover from the hospitals can really eat into your pockets. This is besides the normal charges for the outpatient care as well.

You will find chiropractic charges to be less accumulative and less costly. The reason for this is because most chiropractic treatments are not risky. As a result, the costs of insurance charges are less expensive. Chiropractic doctors transfer this cost advantage over to you. In addition, with chiropractic treatment, you do not have to pay upfront insurance charges.

We all look to make life more affordable and enjoyable. Health on the other hand, is one human right that we cannot be compromise on. For this reason, chiropractic strives to ensure you get best care without the hassles of expensive costs.

4 Most Reported Chiropractic Side Effects

Chiropractic, as we know it is a simple method of treatment that to a larger extent, involves the adjustment of joints to free locked joints hence relieve pain or any other form of discomfort. Many people have sought chiropractic adjustment for many reasons. It is a notion that chiropractors only treat pain and today I want to rectify that notion. Chiropractors help to relieve a wide range of health-related issues.

Have you ever stepped into a chiropractic clinic to verify those common myths and rumors? Well if you haven’t, there is no better way you are going to learn. In fact, consultation with most chiropractors is free. Those who charge do so at very low rates compared to conventional doctors. Today, however, we shall drift away from benefits and reasons why you must check in a chiropractic clinic. Today we are providing an insight into the common side effects on chiropractic. Many studies have been carried out to come up with distinctive side effects of various chiropractic treatments. These studies were either conducted on volunteers or were as a result of conclusive surveys carried out in various chiropractic established localities.

Why is it important to learn about the side effects of chiropractic?

Ever heard about non-disclosure agreements? Well, maybe you have maybe you haven’t. If you haven’t, here it is; non-disclosure agreements are contracts prohibiting the parties to a contract from sharing any information with third parties. You will be happy to know that in chiropractic you will be not be baffled by such terms. Your chiropractor is required by law to inform you about the possible side effects of the particular treatment they are going to administer.

It all comes down to the right to information. You as the patient should be subjected to any form of chiropractic treatment without knowledge of the expected side effects if any. This should help to inform your decision. It will also prepare you. You can arrange for special care after treatment to weather down the side effects. It also serves the chiropractor’s interest to inform you in advance. This would clear the chiropractor of any after treatment dangers if you chose to proceed to go ahead with the treatment after being informed.

Well, now that you know, never walk into a chiropractic clinic and demand for treatment right away. Always sit down with your chiropractor and discuss the best possible option. This is especially crucial if you have a history of chiropractic treatments gone wrong.

4 common side effects of chiropractic treatment

Negative reactions to spinal manipulations are very common. They tend to commonly arise and disappear in a brief period immediately after treatment. Common among these reactions are;

  1. Toxic Release

After your very first chiropractic treatment, you are bound to experience flu-like symptoms as well as a minor cold. Surveys suggest that in every 100 patients who seek chiropractic treatment for the first time, 20 of them experience this effect. If you have ever experienced this and never got to know what it was, then today is your lucky day in class.

The mild cold and flu symptoms arise due to what we call the toxic release. Well although the symptoms sound cynical, you be happy to when you experience them. This is a positive sign that your body is responding accordingly to treatment.

The term toxic release is as self-explanatory as they come. It denotes a case where the chiropractic adjustment you went through is getting rid of toxic substances from your body. According to the theory of negative and positive reactions, the negative side effects simply imply that your body is positively reacting to the adjustments.

The other symptoms associated with toxic release include general fatigue, tight muscles, diarrhea and sweating at night. Do not panic if you experience these symptoms especially after a chiropractic manipulation session.

  1. Nausea

Feeling like you want to vomit is also a common side effect of chiropractic manipulations. Nausea is associated with spinal adjustments. This is because of the position that you lie in a while undergoing treatment. If you lie on your stomach for a prolonged period, your stomach will start to churn. This is what effects the feeling of nausea.

Neck joint manipulations can also cause nausea. Depending on whether your chin is resting firmly on a flat surface or if you are simply supporting your head with your neck muscles, nausea will be inevitable. You do not need to panic because nausea subsides after a short period as soon as you leave the chiropractic clinic. Nothing serious can result from nausea, but you can buy some OTC to weather down the effect.

Nausea should not be associated with any bodily response to the chiropractic treatment. It is a common myth that if you experience nausea, it means your body is rejecting the chiropractic treatment. I hope now you know; nausea is simply as a result of the discomfort in the stomach. In addition, the position you are set in while undergoing treatment causes it.

  1. Headaches

It is common to experience a mild headache after a chiropractic session. It is probably nothing serious but if a headache persists, please sick medical assistance. The headaches usually accompany other side effects such as diarrhea, nausea or fatigue. Many patients have complained of mild headaches after seeking chiropractic treatment.

From the reports, most of the patients say the pain seem to be coming from the forehead. Depending on the chiropractic manipulation you were in for, the severity of the headaches could also vary. I happen to have talked to a patient who discouraged me against the high-velocity spinal manipulations. He claimed that after the treatment, he experienced thumping headaches that only subsided after taking some pain killer drugs.

Your chiropractor should be able to provide you with some form of relief from the expected side effects. Well established chiropractic clinics will be well stocked. From these, you can find painkillers and ice among other relief options for expected side effects. Headaches are most common, and this is why some chiropractors even fail to mention it. If your headaches are normally too severe to bear, you can discuss with your chiropractor to find a better alternative.

  1. Dizziness

Feeling unusually sleepy after undergoing a chiropractic treatment should not sound any alarms. The chiropractic sessions can do quite a number on your number on your body. After undergoing a chiropractic treatment, you should take a 10 to 20-minute rest.

The chiropractors know that the manipulations exhaust your body’s energy reserves. The high-velocity low amplitude manipulations are especially a common result of dizziness. The twisting and turning off your joints and muscles leaves your body tired. This is the reason why you will feel like sleeping and doing nothing else after the exercise.

The side effects detailed above are what you should expect when you go for a chiropractic treatment. It is a guarantee that you will experience them. But if you do, then you have no reason to panic. It is probably nothing serious. If the symptoms persist, always feel free to seek medical treatment.

10 Chiropractic Treatments Of Headache For Children 7-14

Headaches, only second to back pains, are among the commonest conditions that can be regularly managed by chiropractors. Chiropractic is not only a cure but also helps to ease and prevent headaches. People across the globe can safely seek chiropractic treatment for migraines. Several studies support the idea of using chiropractic to cure headaches. In such a study, there was a 90% drop in headaches among individuals who decided to seek chiropractic treatment for headaches. Few interventions can ease headaches as quickly as chiropractic.

You may have your child constantly complaining of headaches. You will be happy to know that chiropractors have ways of treating headaches in all age groups. It is always great to have a say on the type of treatment you would like for your kid. You may not be able to know which treatment is the best unless you have some background knowledge. Well, worry no more, you will learn all the available treatments today. No more choices should be made for your kid.

Effective chiropractic treatments used to help ease your child’s headaches

  1. Reduction of oxidative stress using gentle spinal mobilization

A chiropractor can help reduce your child’s headache by reducing oxidative stress. Oxidative stress is a typical damage. This usually occurs when your body’s free radicals outnumber oxidants present. Such oxidative stress is hazardous to human health. Proteins, lipids, and the presence of oxidative stress will damage your DNA

This could be a major reason as to why your child is constantly complaining of headaches. You should see a chiropractor and sort out the issue soonest. The chiropractor may perform soft, tender spinal mobilization. This is a gentle spinal adjustment technique. Your child will not feel any of the side effects accompanying spinal manipulations.

  1. Reducing oxidative stress using full spinal manipulation

Spinal adjustment is a broad category of chiropractic treatments. If your child is suffering from oxidative stress, they may develop headaches. The option should be gentle spinal mobilization. If this fails, you should allow your chiropractor to perform full a scale spinal adjustments.

Chiropractic adjustment will help to reduce the stress levels in your 14. Many of us assume that a kid cannot suffer from stress. This notion is far from the truth. The fact is that anyone and everyone can suffer from stress. The only difference comes from the source and level of stress. Academic performance can dwindle if you don’t watch your kid’s stress levels. Headaches should act as an early indicator that your kid is developing some stress. Hence, see a chiropractor and let him or her advise you on what can help to ease your child’s headaches.

  1. Chiropractic maintenance care

General chiropractic care should offer some degree of relief to the headaches. We have a wide variety of chiropractic care including initial intensive care which we shall look at later on. Chiropractic care helps to monitor your kid’s general physical well-being. The Chiropractor may then choose to perform some minor massage to the temple or the back of the head.

Chiropractic care is not a one-time activity. For full recovery and prevention of subsequent headaches, consider taking your kid to the chiropractor on a regular basis.

  1. Chiropractic posture

We have all heard about yoga. Yoga was initially a cultural, religious practice but it now has a massive popularity throughout the globe. Yoga offers health benefits due to the postures and movements involved. Likewise, chiropractic treatment for headaches among children utilizes body postures.

If you go to see a chiropractor, there are several questions he or she will ask you. If your 10-year-old boy regularly suffers from headaches, try timing the outbreak of these headaches. You may notice that headaches only occur when your kid wakes up or after long sessions in class. The cause could be the child’s position when sleeping. Sometimes kids tend to sleep without a pillow. As a result, the muscles at the back of the child’s head can get strained. This will lead to painful bursts of a headache in the morning.

A chiropractor should be able to flex this muscle. They can achieve this by applying pressure gently to the backs at the back of your neck. Usually, the motion is made to try and stretch these muscles. A consistent motion should suffice. This practice is carried out with the head tilted at an angle. Most important, ensure to alter this posture depending on which muscles you are stretching. After several flexes, the headaches should subside.

  1. Stretching and exercises

Most of the times the cure is as simple as twitching an eye. We usually feel pretty much wasted when you go to see a chiropractor for a condition you think is very fatal only for him to recommend a very simple treatment. But when it comes to our children, no one takes chances. This should be the case.

You may have heard that exercising helps to relieve headaches and a lot of other pains. If your eight-year daughter comes complaining of a headache, your first instinct may be to administer OTC oral intake. Most of the times over the counter drugs work fine. You wouldn’t want to make your kid drug dependent at such a young age. Also, visiting a chiropractor may offer you a better alternative.

A chiropractor can able to precise determine the type of exercises that will help ease your child’s headaches. Select too tedious tasks and your kid’s headaches may grow even worse. Therefore, choosing the right exercises to relieve headaches should be carefully done.

  1. Cayenne muscle rub

Chiropractors use different techniques to massage our bodies. If you are looking for the best methods, then look for the experienced chiropractor. Mixing modern and traditional techniques can help yield the best chiropractic treatment. Cayenne is a type of pepper. It is known to stimulate the circulation of your body. This unique pepper also helps to reduce acidity in your body.

An experienced chiropractor should know how to rub the cayenne pepper on your child gently. In addition, the cayenne paper inhibits substance P from your child’s body. Substance P is responsible for transmitting pain messages to the brain. Continuous massaging of your kid using cayenne pepper depletes this substance. In very minimal quantities, the transmission of pain to the brain is prevented. This is a non-surgical effective way of helping to relieve your kid’s headaches and any other pain. Therefore, try out this chiropractic treatment and see how well it works for your child.

  1. Lavender oil

Chiropractic uses different oils when carrying out therapeutic massage. Lavender oil is a sedative. You should also know that lavender oil has mood stabilizing properties. We have talked about the tendency of kids to get stressful due to too much work at school and home. The stress levels frequently trigger headaches. As a matter of fact, most of us adults get headaches due to stress levels.

Therefore, using lavender oil on your child is safe, and is quite effective in treating migraines and headaches.

  1. Peppermint oil

I have seen several chiropractors using scented oils to perform massage. Usually, these oils are preferred because they are appealing to the patients. You should be surprised to find your chiropractor using a different type of oil.

Peppermint oil is one of the rare but useful oils that may be used for chiropractic treatment. If your child is suffering from severe painful headaches, your chiropractor will use the most efficient methods. Some methods are painful as well. The child may need a comfortable treatment option. Therefore, you can gently apply peppermint oil to your child’s skin.

Peppermint oil usually generates a cooling effect on the skin. This effect lasts for long. Your child should be in relief after a massage. Also, the peppermint oil will help to reduce sensitivity to headaches.

  1. Initial intensive care

As I promised, we will have a glance at how initial intensive care can be used to help your kid recover from headaches. Intensive care is performed to assess the extent of your kid’s headaches. It is an initial treatment that chiropractors use to offer temporary treatment. This is usually the case when a kid requires immediate and urgent treatment for headaches and migraines. Initial intensive care is also used to relieve other types of pain temporarily. Consequently, the pain may spread from one part of the body to the other. In addition, if your child suffers from recurring headaches, it could be as a result of pain elsewhere. If initial intensive care is administered as a chiropractic treatment, it should be able to contain pain before it spread to the head.

  1. Gluten free diet

This is not a direct treatment option you will get from the chiropractor. It is, however, one of the options your chiropractor should recommend if the other treatment options are inappropriate. Forceful spinal manipulations may have serious side effects. Your kid may not be capable of working out or exercising. You may not have the money to pay for other treatments. But that does not mean your chiropractor will not be able to help.

As a show of ethics, your chiropractor should advise on the best treatment alternatives. This should be irrespective of what he stands to gain. If you have such a trustworthy chiropractor, then he should inform you that gluten-free diets are a great remedy for headaches.

More often than not, we only realize that our children are allergic to certain foods when they negatively react to these foods. In addition, allergic reactions can cause headaches in children aged 7-14 years. Most noteworthy, if your kid is allergic to gluten, always ensure to avoid gluten in their diet.

The Effects of Exercise on Your Brain

When we make the decision to exercise, it’s usually for fear of our beach bod, not our brain power. But while exercise does have a profound impact on whether we can look attractive and still eat ice cream, it actually affects our brain more than our waistlines. Studies have shown that heading to the gym regularly or even adding slightly more activity to our lives sparks the portions of our brain that are left dormant in our sitting lifestyle, and affects our cognitive functions both now and in our older years.

What are the real effects of exercise on your brain, and how can you benefit from them?

  1. You’ll Have Greater Focus

Your brain operates much like an engine. If it’s not properly cleaned, lubricated, and fueled, it’s going to be running at unimpressively half strength. Exercising encourages the flow of oxygen to your brain, which serves as fuel, and also boosts the flow of endorphins, the human body’s natural self-defense mechanism to smooth over pain or fatigue so you can complete tasks better, faster, and for longer. While this chemical was originally meant to keep us on point during times of danger, going for a quick powerwalk can give you the same focus our ancestors needed to make intelligent decisions to ensure their survival.

  1. Your Mood Will Improve Almost Immediately

Any simple exercise that gets your heart rate up more than when you’re sitting at your desk browsing Facebook will trigger endorphins to flood through your body, giving you relief from muscle pain and aches while encouraging you to work out harder. This is your body’s way of rewarding you and also a method of numbing anything that would prevent you from continuing to run, climb, or maneuver – all things that make it possible to escape danger. As a reward, endorphins dull the hormones in your body that fuel a negative mood, naturally soothing you. So by stopping to do a few sit-ups or take a lap around the office, you’re triggering your body’s natural mood stabilizer.

  1. Want a Boost of Creativity? Get Your Blood Pumping

In that afternoon slump where creativity and motivation grinds to a halt, all we need is something to get our brain firing on all cylinders again. You need a little extra gas in the tank to have punch. This comes in the form of a few easy stretches or sit-ups; that increased blood flow encourages a burst of oxygen to the brain, which reactivates the portions of your mind that go dormant during tedious or routine tasks. As a defense mechanism to conserve energy, your brain will in essence reroute power from its creative and long-term memory portions so that you can save this strength for later. Exercise breaks your mind from this routine and lets it know that a new routine is being set in place, so you need more power to take on new tasks. Even if you return to your previous project, your mind will still be enjoying that burst of energy and therefore creativity you need.

  1. Your Neural Signals Will Fire Faster and Better

Since exercise snaps your brain to attention, preparing it for important tasks that would usually be a matter of life or death in our early centuries as a species, it also encourages the paths for neural signals and chemical flow to open up, allowing for the signals to transmit to and from the brain more efficiently. This results in faster response times to pain, bringing relief – especially in your back and neck.

  1. Your Brain Will Not Only Grow, But Grow Healthier

It’s a sad fact of life that as we age, our brain begins to degenerate; but adding a few exercises that get your blood pumping can do away with this. The human brain thrives on oxygen to function at its peak condition by using it as fuel to create new cells, which effectively grow and rejuvenate your mind. As we get older, our brain slows in its production, but exercises that get our heart pumping encourages cell production to boost. Studies show that patients with degenerating brains who make exercise a regular part of their daily routine see a fantastic improvement in their brain growth after just six months in comparison to those who maintained their sedentary lifestyle.

  1. Your Memory Will Get Better and Last Into Your Golden Years

A few too many drinks, a love for the less green food groups, and good ol’ genes can really bite us when it comes to memory – especially in the long run, as we get into our golden years. But taking a few laps up and down the stairs doesn’t just give you killer gluts. A focus group of people aged 55 to 80 showed that those who exercised regularly performed up to four times better on memory tests than those who didn’t. This indicates that exercise has the ability to recover the strength of your memory as well as preserve it before you get older, making it worthwhile to add a few trips to the gym to your schedule if you find yourself forgetting names and dates.

  1. Mental Illness Will be Easier to Manage

Of course there’s no magical cure for mental illness – but your brain does have a few tricks up its sleeve when it comes to soothing the affects it has on your body. The production of hormones known as serotonin and dopamine are designed to boost positive mood, pushing back some of the most negative effects of anxiety, depression, and other mental illness that sap you of energy and motivation. But rather than taking medication to kick these chemicals into gear, you can take advantage of exercise to naturally trigger them in your body. By power walking or jogging on a treadmill for a few minutes, and then drinking a few glasses of water, you’re encouraging your body to flood your system with positive chemicals and then flush out toxins that could be making your body unbalanced.

  1. Stress Will Melt Away

Let’s face it; we’re all a little stressed. We accept it as a part of life, but few understand the true toll it takes on our bodies. High levels of cortisol as a result from stress inspires fatigue, affects our ability to create new cells, and even damages the portion of your brain responsible for storing long-term memories. However, exercise naturally lowers your cortisol levels, melting away stress and leaving you more balanced and relaxed than before. As an extra advantage, the lower levels of cortisol even stimulate your brain’s dentate gyrus, which processes and stores memories. That means you’re not only keeping your brain strong with less stress, but making it possible to become stronger and more resistant to stress as you increase your levels of exercise.

When you find yourself fatigued, bummed out, forgetting a few names and faces, or in need of that extra punch of creativity to complete a task, don’t go for an energy drink or some fancy medication. Doing a few push-ups or a lap around the block could be exactly what you need to activate your brains dormant abilities.

Top 10 Natural Detox Foods

Bad eating habits, stress, and the residue of some nasty sicknesses begin to catch up with our body. In a few years, this has a profound effect on our mood, health, strength, and endurance.

By taking advantage of natural foods that detox the body of these harmful chemicals and impurities, you can experience an immediate and drastic improvement with weight loss efforts and mental health. If you already have injuries such as a herniated disk, liver damage, or a torn muscle, the body can devote even more effort to pain management and healing if cleansed of all the toxins built up inside of you.

Here are 10 of the top natural detox foods that not only taste great, but get you back into prime condition.

  1. Ginger

Ginger is revered as an excellent cure to most of the human body’s ails. With healing effects on headaches, stomach aches, and even mood imbalances, it’s no wonder this root also serves to pry out all the impurities lingering in your body and flush them out for a renewed feeling. You can dice up ginger and add it to your regular meals, or use it in tea for a quick morning pick-me-up in place of soda or coffee, which add toxins to the body. You can also chew on the root for a faster effect.

  1. Wheatgrass

Wheatgrass has earned a bad reputation as a favorite of health nuts who don’t mind the taste, but you can find ways to get around the flavor and still reap the healthy benefits. One is to squeeze half a lemon into your wheatgrass smoothie; the sharp tastes balance each other out into a more pleasant flavor. A smoothie a day will give your body a boost of alkaline, lower your blood pressure, give you more energy, and most of all, cleanse your liver of current or old party days.

  1. Hibiscus Tea

A great drink for relaxing and purifying your body, hibiscus tea is a favorite of those trying to lose weight with a lack of stress and some good ol’ natural remedies in one. The water of course helps your body better function, but the hibiscus works to fight back against the natural bloat that occurs when you consume too much sodium or your body has its fill of toxins. By counteracting your aldosterone levels, your body will release its bloat and water weight, taking off extra pounds so that your strained disks and muscles can feel better.

  1. Guacamole

Ever been told that feeling the burn is a good thing? Then no wonder this Mexican food favorite is great for detoxing your body. The avocado in guacamole works to rid your liver of toxins while the cilantro contains a blend of linalool and geranyl, which calm the stomach, improving your body’s ability to digest and process further toxins. If you find that your back injury is giving you greater discomfort, adding guacamole to your diet will ease the strain your internal organs are experiencing so they can work better to relieve you of pain. If you’re looking to lose weight, without the roadblocks of poor digestion and an overly toxic liver, you can process your foods and drop unnecessary weight faster.

  1. Grapefruit

Juicy, flavorful, and able to go with anything, grapefruit is a large citrus that can gather toxins to it and flush it from your system almost instantly. Since it’s such a juicy fruit, its high water levels help fight against dehydration and work to better flush out your system. While doing that, it’s also contributing fiber for better digestion and vitamins C and B1 to boost your energy and health. It encourages the body to drop extra fat and detoxes your system at the same time.

  1. Green Tea

By now you’d think that green tea fixes nearly everything, right? You’d be correct. Green tea contains less caffeine than any other kind of tea, but replaces its low levels with energizing antioxidants that hunt down and eliminate free radicals within your body before they can drain you of your health. In essence, by allowing your body to function at its peak condition, there’s no need for supplements to give you the energy you lack. By fighting free radicals as they appear and better hydrating your body – while cola and coffee dehydrate you – green tea helps your body work better by staying lubricated and encouraged to flush out unnecessary fat.

  1. Olive Oil

For emergencies and for everyday good eating, olive oil is an excellent natural detox food. You can use it instead of butter in all your cooking, top your salads with it, and even spread it across bread for a wholesome snack to give you energy. Olive oil contains 93% of your daily allowance of vitamin E and is more healthy than some other oily alternatives. If you mix it with fruit juice and drink down a glass, your liver will be encouraged to cleanse itself of toxins and gallstones, but even in lighter doses, it works to drain your body of impurities.

  1. Kale

Nothing kicks back against toxins quite like kale. This lefty green plant has a more appealing taste than some other plants of its kind, and offers specialized abilities in cleansing your kidneys of built-up toxins. As kidneys are somewhat overlooked in the detoxing arena, even if you observe a healthy diet, your kidneys could need some help. It’s a highly effective anti-inflammatory packed with nutrients and antioxidants, so blend it into a smoothie for the most heavy-hitting punch at kicking impurities from your system.

  1. Water

You can’t argue with good ol’ water. The human body is meant to drink, on average, a gallon of water a day – but few people do. However, water serves as an excellent substitute to most other drinks as it curbs hunger, prevents migraines, and by staying hydrated, the joints and discs of your body are able to function better without pain. As the discs in our back rely on water to keep their proper distance from one another, a herniated disc will experience less pain if kept well hydrated. Livers and kidneys work much in the same, and cannot properly filter and flush toxins if they’re running dry. By upping your water intake, you can detox unnecessary fat and even improve your pain levels in injuries.

  1. Asparagus

You’d think something so tasty would be low on the healthy level, but on the contrary, asparagus is a favorite for flushing your system to be as pure and pristine as it was meant to be. Its natural nutrients are designed to peel out the toxins lingering in those hard-to-reach places and help our organs flush them from the body. This leaves your skin healthier and looking younger, kicks back against cancer, calms the stomach, and strengthens the heart. If you’re looking for improved health all around as well as starting back at square one, steaming some asparagus and adding it to your diet is the trick.

When you’re looking to purify your body, all you need is these 10 foods added to your diet. Tasty and effective, you can cleanse your body with every meal.

How to Naturally Get Rid of a Headache

Life these days is too busy to have a headache slow you down. Unfortunately, headaches are often overlooked and left untreated, or they are masked with painkillers to simply hide the pain. These prescription and over-the-counter medications come with a laundry list of adverse side effects that can lead to long-term health issues. The good news? There are remedies that are both natural and effective that can alleviate headache pain!

Headaches are one of the ways your body indicates that something is “off.” They can be triggered by stress, vertebral subluxations, fatigue, allergies, poor posture, bad dietary choices, eyestrain, hormonal shifts, nutritional deficiencies, and everything in between. A headache is your body’s signal that something’s got to give!

Natural remedies have been used for thousands of years to both prevent headaches and treat symptoms as they arise. The best part about natural remedies for headache pain is they come without the long list of adverse side effects that accompany OTC and prescription medications. Here are ten great natural headache remedies:

Natural Headache Remedies

1. Chiropractic

Chiropractic is an amazing, natural pathway to healing. Several clinical trials show that chiropractic adjustments help treat headaches. In one study, 22 percent of those who received chiropractic manipulation reported more than a 90 percent reduction in headaches, and 49 percent reported that the severity of their headaches was significantly reduced after receiving adjustments!

The best part about using chiropractic to treat headaches? Chiropractic care finds the root source of your headache, and through chiropractic adjustments removes these subluxations from your spine. This allows your nervous system and body to function as it should and prevents interference throughout your system.

2. Magnesium

Magnesium is needed for over 300 enzymatic reactions in the human body, including neurotransmission and energy for your very cells — it is clearly important. Unfortunately, magnesium deficiency is incredibly common, impacting around 48 percent of the U.S. population. Soil depletion, digestive disorders, and high rates of antibiotic and prescription medication all inhibit the body’s ability to absorb magnesium.

Several scientific studies have found that people who are magnesium deficient are more likely to suffer from headaches, however supplementing with between 200 and 600 milligrams of magnesium each day helps reduce the frequency of migraines. You can also boost your magnesium intake by consuming more magnesium rich foods such as broccoli, beets, leafy greens, bananas, nuts, seeds, and seafood.

3. Essential Oils

Peppermint and lavender essential oils have both a calming and numbing effect that make them perfect for easing headache symptoms.

Research shows that peppermint oil, which has a cooling effect on the skin, stimulates an increase in skin blood flow and soothes muscle contractions. Try applying 1-2 drops on your temples to allow the oil to do its job!

Lavender oil has long been used to stabilize moods and help people relax. Research shows that lavender is a powerful, safe, and effective treatment for migraine headaches. A study done in 2012 that measured the results of inhaling lavender oil for 15 minutes. This study found that out of 129 headaches, 92 responded to the use of lavender oil as treatment. Apply 1-2 drops to the palm of your hands, form a cup, and inhale to relax your mind and easy your headache pain.

4. Ginger

Ginger root has incredible anti-inflammatory effects on the body. These effects can lead to decreased headache pain as they help relax constricted blood vessels in the head. Ginger also helps alleviate nausea, which is a common player when it comes to migraines!

One study found that just 1/8 teaspoon of powdered ginger worked as well as Imitrex, a top-selling anti-migraine drug, without the potential side effects.

Need ideas for ways to add ginger into your diet? Try adding ginger to your foods, ginger supplements, or ginger tea!

5. B-Complex Vitamins

Studies show that vitamin B2 can reduce the frequency and length of migraines, and vitamin B3 calms vascular headaches by opening up blood vessels to increase blood flow. If you’re frequently fighting headaches, try taking one B-complex vitamin a day — the benefits go far beyond headache relief.

6. Hydrate

Dehydration from coffee, sugary drinks, alcohol, and simply not drinking enough water can leave anyone with a pounding headache. While often overlooked, staying hydrated is one of the best ways to keep headaches away, and drinking water can even help ease symptoms after they’ve begun. Drink up!

7. Stretching

Sitting or standing in one position for an extended amount of time can cause tension in your body and lead to headache symptoms. Also, many of us spend our days hunched over a desk, computer screen, or phone, putting an extra 20-30 pounds of pressure on your neck!

An easy way to avoid a headache from poor posture and a sedentary lifestyle is to get up and get moving every hour. Take a lap around the office, do some neck rolls, go outside, stretch your muscles, and watch as you have fewer and fewer headaches.

8. Cayenne Pepper

Cultures around the globe have used cayenne pepper for centuries for its plethora of health benefits. Cayenne stimulates blood flow and reduces pain and inflammation. The capsaicin compound found within cayenne pepper depletes substance P, a neuropeptide that acts as one of the main elements in our perception of pain. Several studies have found that when you apply cayenne pepper topically, theres a significant decrease in headache pain!

9. Feverfew

Feverfew plant has yellow-ish green leaves and yellow flowers and people have used this herb for thousands of years for medicinal purposes. Headaches are caused by blood vessels in your head expanding and contracting, and feverfew helps relax these constricted blood vessels, relieving pressure.

One research study found that people who took feverfew each day had significantly less painful and severe headaches than a placebo group!

10. Butterbur

Butterbur is another powerful herb that’s been used for centuries as an herbal remedy for pain, fevers, and allergies. A trial conducted in the U.S. and Germany on 245 migraine patients found that those who took butterbur supplements twice daily reduced their headache attacks by 58 percent over the course of 4 months. Just make sure you never ingest any part of the raw, unprocessed butterbur plant because it contains chemicals linked to liver toxicity.

The Acupuncture Procedure: Step by Step

Acupuncture Procedure

Today more and more people are turning to alternative medicine for their medical needs and conditions. However it is still fairly common for some new patients to be slightly skeptical. Below I have outlined a detailed look at the acupuncture procedure to help answer some of the common acupuncture questions we receive.

According to The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine the term acupuncture describes a family of procedures involving the stimulation of points on the body using a variety of techniques.

Acupuncture procedure can be used to relieve pain as well as treat a range of conditions including:

• Allergies
• Asthma
• Indigestion
• High Blood Pressure
• Headaches
• Addictions
• Insomnia
• Anxiety
• Depression
• Stress Management
• Menstrual Irregularities
• Infertility

and many more…

How it Works
Thin needles are inserted into different acupuncture points on the body depending on individual symptoms and conditions. Acupuncture points are located all over the body including the head, arms, shoulders, legs, and feet.

The Needles
Patients are usually surprised at how small acupuncture needles are. They are actually small enough to fit several through the middle of a hypodermic needle and most do not experience any discomfort from the needles since they are so thin. Acupuncture needles are also smooth, not hollow with cutting edges like hypodermic needles, which makes insertion much easier and less painful than when you receive injections or get your blood drawn.

Is Acupuncture Painful?
Since needles are involved many patients have questions about pain related to the acupuncture procedure. For most acupuncture is completely painless. Some may experience slight discomfort while the needles are being inserted or adjusted but this quickly goes away after a few seconds.

For a more information you can read our Does Acupuncture Hurt blog post.

Your First Visit
For some the first visit is simply a consultation to go over any questions or concerns about the acupuncture treatment process. Once comfortable, many patients choose to have their first treatment the same day as their consultation while others choose to set a separate appointment. Don’t be afraid to ask as many questions as it takes to make you completely comfortable with the process before continuing

If a fear of pain is what’s holding you back ask the acupuncturist to insert a needle in an acupuncture point in your hand so that you can experience it and become comfortable before going through the entire process.

Visit Frequency
Visit frequency and length depends on each patient’s individual symptoms and needs. However, in most cases each acupuncture treatment will last between ten to thirty minutes. Seeing as no two bodies heal the same or at the same rate it is difficult to give a treatment frequency outline until a patient has been assessed by the doctor. Patients may notice a decrease in symptoms after their first visit while those dealing with chronic ailments may require several treatments before experiencing relief.

Acupuncture Helps Relieve Headaches and Migraines

Acupuncture Helps Relieve Headaches

Acupuncture helps relieve headaches but when most people think about headache treatments acupuncture doesn’t even make the list of options. Generally we go for one of the many pill shaped “friends” to quickly ease our pain. Unfortunately many of these so called friends can also come with some risky side effects such as liver damage. Acupuncture however can give powerful relief without the harmful side effects that prescription and over-the-counter drugs may eventually cause.

A general headache is defined as a pain anywhere in the head or neck. Acupuncture helps relieve headaches and can be used to treat a variety of headaches from cluster headaches, to migraines, to tension headaches.

How Acupuncture Helps Relieve Headaches:

Thin needles are inserted into different acupuncture points on the body depending on symptoms and type of headaches you suffer from. Acupuncture points for the treatment of headaches are located all of the body including the legs, arms, shoulders, and feet.

Acupuncture needles are small enough to fit through the middle of a hypodermic needle and most patients do not experience any discomfort from the needles since they are so thin. If a patient does feel some sensitivity it is usually during the insertion of the acupuncture needle and this quickly goes away once the needle is set in place. Most are able to completely relax during their treatment with many people even falling asleep during acupuncture sessions.

Visit frequency and length depends on each patient’s individual symptoms and needs. Typically though, each acupuncture treatment last between ten to thirty minutes. Some patients may notice a decrease in symptoms after their first visit while those dealing with chronic ailments may require several treatments before experiencing relief.

  • A clinical observation, published in a 2002 edition of the Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and in a study published in the November 1999 issue of Cephalalgia, scientists evaluated the effectiveness of acupuncture in the treatment of migraines and recurrent headaches by systematically reviewing 22 randomized controlled trials. A total of 1,042 patients were examined. It was found that headache and migraine sufferers experienced significantly more relief from acupuncture.
  • In a case study, published in the June 2003 Issue of Medical Acupuncture, doctors found that acupuncture resulted in the resolution or reduction in the frequency and severity of cluster headaches, and a decrease or discontinuation of medications. It was concluded that Acupuncture can be used to provide sustained relief from cluster headaches and to stimulate adrenal cortisol to aid in discontinuing corticosteroids.
