Valentine’s Day Crafts for Kids

4311462343_606c023b02_m

Valentine’s Day is a day to celebrate those we love and thank them for all that they do. It’s is also a great time to let your kids creativity shine and make something special for their Valentines. Valentine’s Day crafts are a fun way that kids can put their own unique touch on giving to those they care about. Below are some great Valentine’s Day craft ideas for you to share with your children.

DIY Valentine’s Day Craft: Goodie Bags

Looking for that perfect Valentine’s Day gift for your child’s classmates? Making your own “goodie bags” filled with heart shaped or red sweets is sure to make the kids happy, although for the parents sake you may not want to fill them with too much sugar.

Supplies:

All of these supplies can be found at Michaels, JoAnn’s or your local craft store.

• Small cellophane bags or if you’re in a crunch for time you can use Ziploc bags and just make larger tags
• White, Pink, or Red heavy weight matte paper
• Heart or cupid shaped stamps
• Scissors, you can use craft scissors that cut in patterns or make your own patterns with regular scissors

Instructions:

Start by cutting the heavy weight paper the same length as the opening of your cellophane or Ziploc bag. Fold the tags in half and decorate. Let your child’s creativity take front seat on this DIY project allowing them to customize each baggie tag anyway they like. Place the open end of the tags on each side of the baggie and tape closed. It’s that easy; now just remember to make enough for the whole class!

DIY Valentine’s Day Craft: Card for Mom or Dad

Helping your kids make Valentine’s Day cards can be easier and much more fun the running to the mall to try and find a gift. It’s also a great way to save money!

Supplies:

• White, pink, and red construction paper
• Foam letter stamps
• Kids paints in red
• Patterned scissors
• Camera
• Tape

Instructions:

Using the construction paper, stamp letters and paint have your child make different signs saying things like “I love you Daddy”, or “Happy Valentine’s Day Mom”. Next take a picture of your child or children holding the sign/signs. Have the pictures printed or print them on your own photo paper at home.

Take another piece of construction paper and fold it in half to make your card. Cut around the border with your patterned scissors to make the card more interesting. Now just tape the picture or pictures to the front or inside of the card and have your child write a note or sign it. If they are too young to sign their name have them place their hand in the red paint and leave a handprint as their signature!

January: National Blood Donor Month

1032655989_216f19f270_mGiving Blood

Giving blood may be something that doesn’t generally cross your mind or may even make some of you cringe. Blood may not be a fun topic but it is a necessity for those in need of it. January is recognized by health professionals as National Blood Donor month and I wanted to take some time and remind everyone how important it is that we give blood.

Reasons for Giving Blood:

There are many reasons why people give blood including:
• Having a friend or family member who is in need of blood.
• Knowing you could be saving a life
• You receive a mini physical before they draw your blood where your pulse, blood pressure, body temperature, and hemoglobin will all be checked.

There is no right or wrong reason to give blood and there is a continuous need for it.

Requirements for Giving Blood:

• You must be in good health; capable of normal activity
• Weigh a minimum of 110 lbs – Additional weight requirements apply for donors 18 years old and younger and all high school donors.
• Be at least 17 years old in most states, or 16 years old with parental consent if allowed by state law – see more information for 16-year old donors »

Requirements provided by http://www.redcrossblood.org/donating-blood/eligibility-requirements

The Donation Process:

1. While signing in you will be asked to fill out eligibility and donation information forms about donating blood and asked for ID

2. You will be interviewed privately about your medical and traveling history. Next you will receive a mini physical where your pulse, blood pressure, body temperature, and hemoglobin will all be checked.

3. If you are giving blood the actual donation takes approximately 10 minutes. If you are donating platelets, red cells or plasma the donation can take up to two hours.

4. After you have donated a small snack will be provided for you to eat along with something to drink. You will be asked to stay for 10-15 minutes after donating so that they can monitor you and so that any light-headedness can pass.

Be Prepared:

Beyond the initial giving blood requirements it is important that you have a light meal and drink plenty of water before giving blood to help keep you from becoming light headed or passing out. You will need to come ready with your donor card, driver’s license or two other forms of ID. You will also be asked what if any medications you are taking at the time so if you don’t know the names off hand make sure to bring a list.

5 Tips to Keeping Your New Year’s Resolutions

Setting New Year’s Resolutions

Setting and sharing New Year’s resolutions is a tradition in my family. Every New Year marks a new beginning and all across the country people are coming up with goals to better themselves. According to Statistic Brain 45% of Americans set New Year’s resolutions, but only 8% of them actually achieve their goals. Let’s take a look at some pointers that can help you set and achieve your New Year’s resolutions.

Be Realistic

In my opinion one of the biggest reasons many of us don’t achieve our New Year’s resolutions is because we set unrealistic expectations or goals. The prospect of a New Year and a better you are promising and motivating but that doesn’t turn you into a super hero. Whether you’re looking to lose weight, become more organized, or quit smoking you need to be sensible. Remember it is better to make smaller goals and exceed your hopes than to become frustrated with larger goals and quit.

Don’t Overload Your Goals

There are a million ways in which we could all better ourselves, but that doesn’t mean we need to set a million New Year’s resolutions. Keep it simple start with one or two resolutions and if you accomplish those then set more goals. January 1st is not the only day we can decide to challenge ourselves!

Be True to Yourself

If your New Year’s Resolution is to become more organized because you are one of the messiest people on the planet, don’t expect to become the cleanest. This ties in to keeping your expectations and goals realistic. If you are too hard on yourself you will be more likely to just throw in the towel and return to your old ways. Embrace your messiness in certain areas, like your storage closet, and focus on organization in your office. Once you have achieved that move on to the other areas of your life.

Plan Ahead

This is extremely important to your success in keeping your goals. It is easy to decide to start exercising and then forget about it, but if you have a plan you’re more likely to keep to your goals. Again start small and work your way up. Plan specifics, when things are left up in the air you are more likely to push them off or procrastinate.

Let Yourself Win

Another great way to motivate yourself and keep pushing forward is to set mini goals within your larger goal to allow for “wins”. For example if your New Year’s resolution is to lose 30 lbs set a realistic date by which to lose the first 10 lbs  That way when you’ve hit that mark you feel like it’s an accomplishment instead of feeling like you haven’t lost enough yet.

Make this year the year you finally keep and achieve your New Year’s goals! Comment below to share your resolutions for this year!

8 Simple Tips to Help You Commit to Exercise

125630791_03d0b5ee28_m

We all need motivation, and it is especially important when we want to commit to exercise routines or goals. Here are 8 simple tips to help motivate and keep you committed to exercise.

How to Commit to Exercise:

1. Write Out a Plan of Action

To commit to exercise requires focus, and focus requires a plan. Take the time beforehand to outline your daily and weekly workout routines. For extra motivation write out monthly goals and track your progress.

2. Don’t Overdo It

You’re not in a Rocky movie, exercising for several hours daily will lead to nothing but pain, injury, and the decision to stay on your couch. For the sake of your pride and physical safety try starting out with 15-20 minute workouts 3-4 times a week and gradually move to 45 minute workouts 3-4 times a week. As you work up your stamina you can take on longer exercise routines and workout more often.

3. No Excuses

We are all guilty of making excuses at times. Many times we start working out and it’s great for a few days but then the inevitable happens; a day comes when we just don’t want to do it. So we make up an excuse as to why we don’t need to, which works since we only have to convince ourselves. However tempting it may be to skip a workout take a look at your goals and hang in there. You hold the power to commit to exercise, your goals, and yourself.

Worried about fitting exercise into your busy day? Read 4 Ways to Fit Exercise Into Your Day.

4. Commit to Exercise Vacations!

Exercise is a lot of work so don’t be afraid to commit to exercise vacations occasionally  Many people are afraid to stop working out once they start. This is understandable but our bodies need time to replenish and we should honor that. That being said these breaks should be planned and not taken at random. Schedule a consistent break of three to seven days every few months and then get back at it.

5. Mix It Up

If you consistently go through the same routine your mind and body will become bored. Be creative with your workouts changing them often, try group classes, or change up the environment by moving your routine outside.

6. Get A Workout Buddy

Never underestimate the power of guilt. There are some people who are self motivated enough to workout alone. Many of us though find ourselves in need of a friend. Having a workout buddy at best helps you stay committed to your exercise plan, and at least forces you to come up with better excuses to bail.

7. Less Is More

Though it’s impressive to be the one curling 75 pound hand weights at the gym, unless your goal is to be a bodybuilder it’s unnecessary. You can reach your goals with proper use of light to mid range weights, body-weight, resistance bands, and exercise balls.

8. Think Positive

Everyone has bad days and everyone will experience times when they feel they’ve stopped progressing in their exercise goals. The important thing is to stay positive and keep pushing forward. Revisit your goals often and remember why you started exercising in the first place.

Sciatica Nerve Pain – 3 Reasons To Get Relief

5983550689_57efd7e179_m

What is Sciatica?

Sciatica is a condition caused by inflammation of the sciatic nerve that travels from the lower back all the way down the leg to the calf and foot. Pressure or tension on the sciatic nerve can create sciatic nerve pain. The sciatic nerve is one of the largest nerves in the human body, which explains why sciatica nerve pain can be so disruptive to one’s life. Irritation of the sciatic nerve can cause a number of different symptoms or combinations of symptoms, including but not limited to:

Numbness
Tingling
Burning
A deep, dull ache
Sharp, shooting pain
Electric, radiating pain
A loss of strength in the leg or foot

Don’t Allow Sciatica Nerve Pain to Take Over Your Life

In today’s society it has become all too popular to mask our pain instead of dealing with it. As a chiropractor I find myself repeatedly asking patients why they waited so long to come into the office. Usually I am answered with one of three reasons: I thought it would go away, I felt better while I was taking pain medication, or I don’t have health insurance.

I Thought It Would Go Away

The problem with this line of thinking is that the “it” isn’t referring to the nerve problem or injury; it’s referring to pain. It is true that pain can come and go but what we don’t see or feel is that whether or not pain is present the problem (inflammation, pressure, or tension on the nerve) that caused the pain in the first place may still be present. If you allow this problem to continue simply because the pain has stopped it may eventually lead to chronic pain conditions and intermittent sciatic nerve pain flare ups.

I Felt Better While I Was Taking Pain Medication

Pain medication is both a gift and a curse for the same reason; it takes away or lessens your pain. This is a gift because you are able to focus on other things besides your pain. It is a curse because it may sometimes trick you into feeling that there is no longer a problem. Often time’s patients may even make matters worse by continuing normal activity sense they feel better on pain meds instead of resting and letting their body heal.

I Don’t Have Health Insurance

This is perhaps one of the top reasons patients wait so long to seek care. It is extremely important to know that many chiropractors will work with cash patients to set up a payment plan that works for them. Also you need to keep in mind that the longer you go without care the worse the situation or condition will become, meaning you will most likely need more extensive care for a longer period of time than if you come in when the symptoms start.

It’s time to throw out the excuses and put your health first! Chiropractic care will locate and treat the core cause of your sciatica nerve pain naturally and effectively. To set up a consultation and exam or to have more questions answered call Hinz Family Chiropractic at (615) 503-9900.
